Showtime on Offense? Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Washington ready to strike
ASHBURN, Virginia – Our impression so far of the WFT plan to be better in 2021? We believe they intend to strike aggressively as an offensive unit in Washington.
Will the plan succeed? No one knows for sure, but it won’t be for lack of trying.
As noted above, Scott Turner and Ron Rivera didn’t bring in Curtis Samuel and Dyami Brown to be underused weapons in a conservative mindset.
They’ll be absolutely more aggressive because of those two, combined with Terry McLaurin … and Ryan Fitzpatrick not only has a more consistent arm than any of the four quarterbacks who played in Washington last year – he is, too. smart and much more mobile than some might think. .

The latter aspect allows an offense to expand games when coverage fails.
The numbers tell one side of the story. Fitzpatrick was a 30-of-69 combined on passes that have traveled 20 yards or more in the past two years, per ESPN and John Keim.
Washington didn’t have much success (12-44) on passes over 20 yards with Dwayne Haskins and Alex Smith.
The success rates are quite a disparity.

More importantly, there’s this: It was clear in the latter part of the season that Washington’s horizontal pass attack wasn’t going to work at all until they tried to stretch the pitch.
Whether or not they succeeded in the attempt was less important than the overall impact. We can think of several games (Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Dallas, in particular) where this happened.
Attempting to go intermediate to deep early loosens the box for the running game and spreads out the defenders a bit more, sometimes resulting in a cushion cover out of the man or two deep safeties, which helps the short game, below the pass.
With a much better QB situation this year, the WFT should be able to hammer home this advantage.
It’s not just about making big pieces, but also allowing small pieces to have a chance by sending a message. If a team can make both work, they can have an explosive attack.
If a team does not try to relax the defense in this way, they are handicapped. What about this year? With the weapons coordinator Turner has now, the 2021 offense is set to be drastically different – with “drama” that can put on quite a spectacle.
