Sansum Diabetes Research Institute’s (SDRI) strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest independent charity appraiser in the United States.
SDRI has also obtained the highest level of recognition, the Platinum Seal of Transparency, from GuideStar, a service of Candid. This is the second consecutive time that SDRI has won this distinction from the two charity reviewers.
“The Sansum Diabetes Research Institute’s outstanding 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its reliability to the public,” said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities assessed by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating.
“This adds SDRI to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can be confident that their donations will go to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support SDRI.
In line with SDRI’s belief to be transparent about its work, SDRI conveys organizational results in a user-friendly and highly visual manner. By updating its nonprofit profiles on GuideStar and Charity Navigator, SDRI can easily continue to share up-to-date organizational metrics with its supporters as well as GuideStar and Charity Navigator’s online audience, which includes donors, donors, our peers and the media.
In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focusing on governance and ethical practices, as well as openness metrics, to its rating methodology. These accountability and transparency measures, which account for 50% of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities are operating according to industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders.
The improvements further confirm the financial health of SDRI’s 4-star rating. By sharing metrics that highlight SDRI’s progress toward its mission, the organization helps donors move beyond simplistic nonprofit valuation methods such as overhead ratios.
“It is important that our donors have the confidence that we are using their donations wisely to accomplish our mission to improve the lives of those affected by diabetes through research, education and care,” said Ellen Goodstein, Director executive of the SDRI.
“Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating and GuideStar platinum transparency seal demonstrate our good governance and financial accountability to our supporters and help us better communicate our organization’s exciting initiatives globally,” she said. declared.
