Rochester woman falls victim to Geek Squad scam

Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – Among the latest scams reported to the Rochester Police Department is one that involved the notorious Best Buy Geek Squad.
RPD captain Casey Moilanen says a 69-year-old Rochester woman who needed tech support decided to do what most people do – she “Googled” for help.
Among the links that appeared on his screen, there was one to the “Best Buy Geek Squad.” Or at least she thought so.
Moilanen says the woman opened the link and quickly spoke to a man who agreed to help her – for a fee. He managed to convince her to send him two payments of $ 500. Moilanen says that shortly after sending the money, the woman realized that the “link” she had opened was not legitimate and that she was over $ 1,000 and she called her department.
Moilanen says there are plenty of scams like these going around and calls for caution when opening links that may seem like the real thing.
