The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) will participate in the feasibility study carried out jointly since March 2021 by the SABER consortium with the aim of establishing a bunkering system for ship-to-ship based ammonia in the Port of Singapore, the world’s largest bunker port.

The consortium is made up of the American classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the Hong Kong-based ship management company Fleet Management Limited, the Singaporean shipyard Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), the Danish company transport and logistics company AP Moller – Maersk A/S, the Denmark-based nonprofit Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, and the Japanese general trading company Sogo shosha Sumitomo Corporation.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in a ceremony held on April 6, 2022 during Singapore Maritime Week 2022. Taking place from April 4 to 8, Singapore Maritime Week is an annual gathering of the international maritime community to advance key industry issues. and exchange ideas to move the sector forward.

As informed, the partners will work on development work to establish an integrated ammonia supply chainin order to start ammonia bunkering during this decade.

Emitting zero CO2 when burned, ammonia has been considered one of the promising options among various alternative marine fuels to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the shipping industry, which is in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strategy to achieve a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 levels.

Specifically, the study aims to cover the entire end-to-end ammonia bunker supply chain, ammonia bunker vessel design, and related supply chain infrastructure. .

Government agencies and relevant experts in Singapore will work to standardize safe operation and regulations.

Each partner will contribute to the study within the framework defined according to its field of activity.
