TOKYO, Jul 30, 2021 – (JCN Newswire) – – The Rotterdam Port Authority (POR), Koole Terminals, Chiyoda Corporation and Mitsubishi corporation have entered into a memorandum of understanding for the joint study of commercial scale hydrogen imports in the Port of Rotterdam using Chiyoda’s hydrogen storage and transport technology (SPERA HydrogenTM).

In May 2020, POR has announced its hydrogen vision, in which it aims to develop green hydrogen supply chains for North West Europe and become a hub for hydrogen imports. Its objectives are to produce 20 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2050, with scaled volume targets of 100,000 to 200,000 tonnes by 2025 and 300,000 to 400,000 tonnes by 2030.

Successfully completed in december 2020, the first international hydrogen supply chain using SPERA Hydrogen connects the Nation of Brunei and from Japan Kawasaki City. Technology is expected to play an important role in realizing larger commercial scale hydrogen supply chains around the world. Supported by a strong and shared interest in both Chiyoda’s technology and its commercial potential, the aforementioned parties to this MoU have already engaged in numerous discussions regarding future applications and opportunities.

In accordance with the terms of this MoU, MC will take the initiative to forge a commercial hydrogen value chain. Through this initiative and others, sogo shosha is demonstrating its commitment to preserving the environment and developing sustainable societies by helping to meet long-term emission reduction targets and accelerating energy transitions in Europe.

* SPERA Hydrogen is an organic chemical hydride (OCH) hydrogen storage and transport technology. LOHC (liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier) technologies allow hydrogen to be transported safely in chemical tanks at normal temperature and atmospheric pressure.
