Cannon River Cleanup collects 4 tons of garbage and a safe
The 13th annual Cannon River Watershed Cleanup took place this past weekend.
Kevin Strauss, Community Engagement Coordinator at Clean River Partners (formerly Cannon River Watershed Partnership) was today’s guest of AM Minnesota at Professional Pride Realty in Northfield.
Strauss commented: “Our primary focus is on the Cannon River and all of the creeks and rivers that flow into the Cannon River.”
What is the size of the watershed?
“It’s almost a million acres actually,” he said, “The western end is way beyond the Shields Lake area and a bit to the west of there. The south end is just south of Owatonna. The east end is Red Wing. “
The Cannon River is a tributary of the mighty Mississippi River and flows through LeSueur, Rice, Dakota, and Goodhue counties.
Communities along the river include Cannon Falls, Dundas, Faribault, Morristown, Randolph, Red Wing, Waterville, Warsaw Township, and Welch Township.
Tributaries to the Cannon River include Trout Brook, Little Cannon River, and Straight River.
The Cannon River flows 112 miles in total.
This year’s cleanup took place in seven different communities. Strauss pointed out that about 200 people participated in Waterville, Cannon Falls, Shieldsville. Faribault, Owatonna and Northfield with two groups in Northfield clear sections of the river in Riverside Park and Carleton Arboretum.
Some volunteers canoeed part of the river.
Strauss said: “The most exciting thing found was a safe dropped off a bridge. So the volunteers literally dragged that safe into their canoe and put it to safety on the shore. They have it. dropped off at the Northfield Police Department. Apparently there was a theft a few weeks ago and the police were interested in taking a look and see what they could find. “
Strauss went on to say, “We find tires, we find grills, we find fans, which always amazes me that people decide it’s a good thing to jump into the river.”
The effort required about 8,000 pounds (4 tons) of garbage from these seven points along the river.
I called the Northfield Police Department to see if the safe provided any clues to the recent theft.
“We find that when we mention the word watershed, people are a little confused as to what a watershed is. The simplest explanation is that a watershed is all the land that flows to a particular river. So if a drop of water lands anywhere in the Cannon River watershed will end up flowing directly into the Cannon River. People who live on the Straight River get confused and say, wait a minute, we’re not in the Cannon watershed, we’re in the Straight watershed. “
Strauss added, “Next we have to remind them that they are in a sub-watershed of the Cannon River watershed. We know that waste placed anywhere in the watershed will eventually enter the barrel. and end up in Red Wing. “
Could you guess some of them?
